To the absence of Flusser, in sound, (and the absence of sound in Flusser)

Anthony Moore

The piece, "To the absence of Flusser, in sound (and the absence of sound in Flusser)" is originally a surround sound work designed for 4 loudspeakers placed in the corners of a lecture room. For stereo playback in headphones, the 4 tracks have been specially encoded and re-spatialised by Martin Rumori. Hopefully the impression persists that the sounds move round behind you! The piece lasts 6 minutes or so. From cassette recordings of his lectures and with the exception of only one or two key words, all the sounds Flusser and his audience were making OTHER than his speech - whispering, coughing, scraping of chairs and perhaps most importantly the sound of his writing on a chalkboard - were assembled into a composition. Time is sliced lengthwise into 4 layers. They start to slip against each other. Simultaneity and differences in time are natural products of wave phenomena and may serve us, metaphorically, for provoking enquiry into perception and communication space.
